We all know that proper nutrition comes from eating the right kinds of foods in the right amounts. We create wellness within us by knowing about nutrition and implementing it into our lives. For many of us, however, it’s sometimes easier said than done. So, why is it that so many people are struggling to properly implement nutrition and wellness into their diets? Busy lifestyles are often blamed for improper dietary habits, and while this might be a valid factor, it shouldn’t be. There are lots of quick, easy and nutritious meal options out there, and busyness shouldn't be used as an excuse when it comes to your family’s health.

It’s important to remember that the dietary choices that people make affect not only them, but their families as well. As parents, how we eat will end up influencing how our children eat, and possibly how other generations go on to eat as well. The choices that we make now will also affect our future health, and possibly our longevity.

 

So, what can we do to improve our overall nutrition and wellness? In the US, there are many readily available basic dietary guidelines that clearly outline which foods to eat and which to avoid, as well as valuable information about portioning. These guidelines, if implemented and followed successfully, are thought to decrease the risk of obesity, disease and poor health in general. The risk of diabetes, heart diseases and other illnesses declines if the guidelines are properly administered.

 

The guidelines recommend eating more nutrient-full foods and less fatty or sugary foods, becoming more active, and staying within a set calorie limit. The correct caloric intake can vary from person to person; it is always advised to seek a doctor 's opinion and advice before starting a new physical regime or diet. It’s unlikely that a doctor will advise against exercise and dieting unless a severe health problem is apparent.

Here’s a good starting guide for improving your nutrition and overall health:

 

Calories: Don't get stuck in the common trap of focusing solely on counting calories. The overall nutrition of a food is just as important, if not more so. Make use of the nutrition facts on the food’s label, looking at the levels of fat, sugar, carbohydrates, protein, and so on. This will give you a good overall picture of whether the food is healthy or not. Choose wholesome foods that include various vitamins, minerals, fibers, and other nutrients that are great for your body.

 

Keeping everything balanced: Be sure to stay as active as you can as you incorporate your new,  nutrient-packed diet into your lifestyle. Experts agree that if you want to maintain your current weight you’ve got to do at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. If you want to lose weight, you have to do more than 30 minutes of real exercise a day. If you aren't used to exercising, start out slow and build your routine up gradually.

 

Eat plenty of the right foods: Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and calcium--rich foods. These food groups are packed full of nutrients that are perfect for helping you boost your nutrition and wellness.

 

Keep it lean: Meats should ideally be free of fat. If there is an excess of fat on the meat, such as is commonly found on a pork chop, trim the fat off before cooking and eating. There are plenty of supermarkets and stores that sell lean meat, which will cut down on your cooking time. Bettering your nutrition and wellness will necessitate making  some drastic lifestyle changes, but it’s worth it. The changes you make now are for the betterment of your health, as well as your family’s, and you’ll feel great after you take that first big leap in the right direction!
