Rachel Roy
Rachel Roy is a New York fashion designer that first became well-known as the romantic interest of Damon Dash, the hip hop producer and businessman. They married and have two daughters named Ava and Tallulah Ruth. But, don't expect a whole lot of street in her chic. Instead, think polished. In fact, Roy says that while growing up, Marlene Dietrich movies were more her speed than MTV. Why does Well Now Magazine love Rachel Roy? Because this 36 years-old fashion combo of beauty and brains is an unassuming mom, with a primary focus on raising her daughters, working hard, and giving back to the community. She says that her favorite sound is hearing her daughters call her “Mama.”- it is just the sweetest. And how can we not love a mom that is constantly regarded as one of the kindest, most gracious people you ever want to meet.
Originally from California, Rachel is multi-cultural (her father is a first generation Bengali immigrant and her mother is of Dutch ancestry). She attended college in Washington DC. Upon graduation, Rachel pursued her passion for design, and moved to New York City to work freelance; styling magazine shoots and music videos ultimately landing an internship at Rocawear. As an intern she worked in every department at Rocawear, from the mailroom to marketing and finally, women's design. As the company was in its infancy, Rachel quickly proved herself as an essential commodity, ultimately to become Creative Director overseeing seven licensees and running all of the design departments and their teams for Rocawear Juniors and Girls. In Fall 2004, she applied her sophisticated aesthetic to her own collection, RACHEL ROY, which debuted in department and specialty stores to great success and has since proved that she's still very much her own woman. She was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
If there is something anachronistic about Rachel Roy--the siren-red lips; the drop-diamond earrings; the fitted, 1940s-style dress, and all this mid-afternoon in her New York City office--the designer likes it that way. Roy admits her parent didn’t allow her to watch television growing up. Instead, she spent countless hours watching classic movies. The “beautiful 1940s” women were a strong influence for her.
Everything about Rachel Roy speaks to the modern mom who knows the juggling acts of being a parent, a professional, and a great person. Is Rachel Roy obsessed with the daily demands of the fashion industry? We think not. Happy, healthy and fit? YES!
